Tooth glances over her shoulder at Jamie’s bedroom window.

“I should get going,” she says nervously as she backs up a little.

“Hmm? Oh, oh yeah! Just…one last thing,” you say. “Is it possible for his mind to have forgotten me, yet the memories still existing somewhere deep in his mind? Buried away, in a sense?”

She shakes her head. “I completely removed all memories of you. There are none hidden away in the depths of his mind, so there’s no chance of memories all of a sudden resurfacing without some extreme prompting.”

You sigh. This information is bittersweet.

“But,” she continues, “there is a chance that the heart can remember what the mind can’t. Kind of like how he will retain the growth and lessons he learned while with you. But not the same way…am I making any sense?”

You chuckle. You don’t completely understand, but there’s one thing that makes sense to you, and that is enough. His heart remembers you. You will forever be there, with him, even though his mind will never remember.

And that provides you with an odd sort of comfort.

“Thank you, Tooth. For everything,” you say as you smile up at her.

She smiles softly back at you, as if your thanks put to rest a part of her mind that has been wrought with turmoil since she did what she had to a few days ago.

“Goodbye,” she says as she turns around, waving back at you as she flies off.

“Goodbye, and good luck!” you yell after her.

She disappears into Jamie’s room, passing through the closed window effortlessly like a ghost does to a wall.

You see a tall, slim figure holding a hooked staff pop out from around the corner at the end of the street.

Your heart skips a beat involuntarily. You stand there, frozen where you are, unable to move as he flies up the street.

Jack.

He stops at Jamie’s window, pushes it open and enters the room, vanishing from your sight. All you can see is the soft yellow light of Jamie’s nightlight flicker and dim as the shapes belonging to the Guardian and winter spirit move about the room.

A minute or two later, you just barely catch a glimmer of golden sand out of the corner of your eye. Looking up, you see Sandy floating above the rooftops on his cloud of dreamsand, racing against North, who is running on the roofs with such lightness and at a speed that defies his immensity.

Just behind them zips a tiny hummingbird.

Wait, no…it’s the Baby Tooth that Jack saved!

The three of them seem to share the same destination as Jack and Tooth. North just barely beats out Sandy, leaping down from the rooftop to the windowsill. He somehow manages to squeeze his large figure through the slim opening, the Sandman dissipating his cloud and drifting in after him, with Baby Tooth zooming in past his shoulder.

That just leaves Bunny.

Must be taking the tunnels, you figure after waiting another couple of minutes for any signs of the large rabbit.

You smile at the fact that the six of them are in little Jamie’s room, seeking to recover his lost tooth.

It’d really be something else if he woke up, you think as a new wave of exhaustion sweeps over you.

Just as you turn around and take a couple steps towards the house, you hear an alarm clock ring through the otherwise-silent night air, making you whirl back around, your heart racing from the sudden disturbance. As if by instinct, you direct your attention to Jamie’s illuminated window.

You see shadows of figures run frantically around the room, the one you know belongs to Jack perching up by the window, pinned against the wall as several balls of golden light bounce around, obviously seeking yet missing a specific target, wreaking havoc and chaos.

Jamie must have woken up, after all. You can just barely hear the barks of his pet greyhound through the crashes as things are knocked over and off of walls.

One-by-one, the figures are hit by stray balls of what you assume to be dreamsand, collapsing to the floor as they are taken by dreams.

A yelp from the dog and a couple of thumps later, the room is still once more. You see Jack descend from his roost, somehow managing to not have been hit by dreamsand. A brief blip of slightly-dimmer golden sand tells you that Sandy has also made it safely.

Somewhere in the depths of you mind, you wonder if he can be knocked out by his own dreamsand.

Some movement at the base of the house, in the dark alleyway between Jamie’s and the neighbor’s, diverts your attention from the winter spirit’s dark outline.

Your eyes widen as it emerges from the shadows, flying up to the child’s window to get a look at what has taken place. It hovers for a moment as it takes in the information, trying hard to not alert the survivors of the incident.

It's sandy black coat gleams in the moonlight, the nighttime blue and deep violet tints reflecting the pale beams. The snakelike streaks trailing from its joints and mane flow behind it, waving less frantically in its stealth. Its fiery eyes are focused on the room, taking long, careful notes so it can accurately report to its king.

A Nightmare.
Ok. So I think that ES may end up being a chapter or two over 60 chapters. I came up with this fantastic idea today and now just can't exclude it from the story.
I hope I don't end up overstaying my welcome...Or whatever the phrase is. xD
